Pleven Medical University was established in 1974, expanding the horizons, size and reputation of the City Hospital which was founded in 1865. Today, combining traditions of the past with the latest techniques, it incorporates educational and therapeutic facilities and a contemporary pre-clinical base-the Institute Hospital which has more than 1000 beds and clinics in all major medical fields, as well as a large number of specialized clinics and research units with modern diagnostic and therapeutic equipment. These are used to treat patients, train students, trainee doctors, post-graduates and for research work.

Medical University - Pleven offers a full-time 6-year course of training in the specialty of Medicine which is structured in the following way: 2 years of pre-clinical study, 3 years of clinical study, and one year of state clinical practice /internship/. For more information see the Academic Curriculum. All graduates are awarded a Master’s Degree diploma of completed higher medical education. The academic Masters Degree is conferred to them along with the professional qualification Physician. The studies are carried out in two courses according to the medium of instruction - in English or in Bulgarian. Students at Medicine in English course have to attend compulsory classes in Bulgarian language for 6 hours a week for the first three years of training in order to be able to communicate with patients at the University hospital throughout their clinical studies.

Foreign citizens applying to Medical University Pleven must present the documents listed below
Diploma (a copy) of completed secondary (high) school education and an academic transcript indicating the disciplines studied and the grades received. The applicants should have taken Biology and Chemistry courses with an average score of not less than 62% of the maximum one based on the grading system in the country of origin of the secondary (high) school they have attended.
Document (original) issued by a competent authority, certifying the applicant,s right to apply and continue their education in higher schools/universities in the country of origin of the secondary (high) school they have attended.
Health certificate (original) issued not earlier than one month prior to application and verified in the country from which the candidate is applying.
Document (a copy) certifying the citizenship or two documents certifying the citizenship - for the candidates with dual citizenship, one of which is Bulgarian.
4 recent photos - 4/5 cm.
The documents listed above (p. 1, 2, 3, 4) must be legalized (Apostille-affixed), translated in Bulgarian and verified according to the official state procedures.
The documents (original) should be submitted to the Foreign Student Admission Office of Medical University Pleven by the applicants in person or by their representatives to be considered for admission.
Foreign citizens with UK pre-university educational qualification applying to Medical University - Pleven must present the documents listed below
1. Application form including brief personal data, educational background and the courses which they are applying for.
2. GCSEs (a copy) issued by one of the official examination boards in UK or in country of origin
3. GCE Advanced Level (a copy) issued by one of the official examination boards in UK (AQA, OCR/CIE, Edexcel, CCEA/ICAAE, WJEC) or in the country of origin - awarded in Biology and Chemistry - at least one of these two subjects at A-level, and the other one - either in A/S (Advanced Subsidiary) level or in the GCSE. The grades awarded for the two subjects must be A or B. (In cases where the applicants apply before they have taken their final A-level exams they should present provisional "Statement of Results" when applying and additionally - the actual certificate)
4. Health certificate (original) issued not earlier than one month prior to application and verified in the country from which the candidate is applying.
5. Document (a verified copy) certifying the citizenship or two documents certifying the citizenship - for the candidates with dual citizenship, one of which is Bulgarian. 4 recent photos - 4/5 cm
6. The documents listed above (p. 2, 3, 4, 5) must be legalised (Apostille-affixed), translated into Bulgarian and verified according to the official state procedures.
7. The documents (original plus two photocopies for non-EU citizens) should be submitted to the Foreign Student Admission Office of Medical University - Pleven by the applicants in person or by their representatives to be considered for admission.
Student loans for education in Bulgaria are available only for applicants who are residents of an EU member state or the EEA. Any current or newly accepted student or PhD student under the age of 35 may take a loan to pay his/her tuition fee.
It is required that applicants have full, unsuspended student rights (be full-time students) and hold an EU citizenship or be part of the European Economic Area (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein).
To withdraw a loan, current students must fill out a standardised form and get it confirmed by the University where they are enrolled. The form contains personal details of the student, semester of study, the amount of the tuition fee, degree and other information.The amount needed to pay the tuition fee is transferred by the bank directly to the university. For the first semester, new applicants have to pay the tuition fee for the first semester and reclaim this amount when the university has issued a document certifying student status and the receipt for the paid semester fee...

The total amount of the loan, including principal and interest, shall be repaid in equal monthly installments within 10 years. Borrowers can pay their loans back earlier without additional fees due. Interest rate is fixed at 7%. Students will have to start paying the loan back one year and one month after the date of their official graduation.
The small city of Pleven is situated in the middle part of the Danube hilly lowland, 160 km from the capital Sofia, 320 km from the Black Sea and 30 km south from the Danube River. It is easily accessible by road (Sofia - Varna (E83). The population is about 135,000. Pleven has a temperate-continental climate with temperatures that vary from -10C during the winter to +30C during the summer. The history of the town and the region dates back thousands of years to the 5th millennium BC. Some of the most interesting landmarks of the town are the Historical Museum, the Panorama "Pleven Epopee", the Wine Museum in the Kaylaka Park and the remains of Storgoziya Fortress.
