Medical University Plovdiv was established in 1945. The university has experienced steady growth in the last decade in various aspects. Its campus has been upgraded with the construction of a new modern building in 2005, where the Faculty of Dental Medicine is located.

The number of foreign students at Medical University of Plovdiv has also experienced steady growth in recent years especially with the improvement of the university`s infrastructure and the introduction of many new programmes taught in English. In 2013 the prize for the Best Foreign Student in Bulgaria was awarded to a student from the Medical University of Plovdiv. Medical University of Plovdiv received an international recognition of its quality in 2013, where it was awarded the prize for "Best University" for its leading position in the field of education by the European Business Assembly at Oxford Summit of Leaders "Science and Education" conference in Oxford, UK.

Admission of foreign students at Medical Univesity Plovdiv
Foreign citizens applying to Medical University Plovdiv must present the documents listed below:
Diploma (a copy) of completed secondary (high) school education and an academic transcript indicating the disciplines studied and the grades received. The applicants should have taken Biology and Chemistry courses with an average score of not less than 62% of the maximum one based on the grading system in the country of origin of the secondary (high) school they have attended. Document (original) issued by a competent authority, certifying the applicants right to apply and continue their education in higher schools/universities in the country of origin of the secondary (high) school they have attended.
Health certificate (original) issued not earlier than one month prior to application and verified in the country from which the candidate is applying. Document (a copy) certifying the citizenship or two documents certifying the citizenship - for the candidates with dual citizenship, one of which is Bulgarian. 4 recent photos - 4/5 cm.
The documents listed above (p. 1, 2, 3, 4) must be legalized (Apostille-affixed), translated in Bulgarian and verified according to the official state procedures.
The documents (original) should be submitted to the Foreign Student Admission Office of Medical University Plovdiv by the applicants in person or by their representatives to be considered for admission.

Foreign students may apply for training in:
- Bulgarian language course (all specialties) - in case they pass one-year Bulgarian language preparatory course
- English language course (Medicine, Dental Medicine and Pharmacy) with parallel Bulgarian language course during the first two years.

Tution fees
The annual tuition fee of does not include accommodation, health insurance, textbooks and educational handbooks which are at the students own expense.
Medicine in English:
Master’degree 6 years
€4,000 per semester (approx. GBP 3,500 depending on the daily currency rate)
Dental Medicine in English:
Master’degree 6 years
€4,000 per semester (approx. GBP 3,500 depending on the daily currency rate)
Pharmacy in English:
Master’degree 5 years €4,000 per semester (approx. GBP 3,500 depending on the daily currency rate)

Entry Requirements
Foreign citizens with UK pre-university educational qualification applying to Medical University - Plovdiv must present the documents listed below:
1. Application form including brief personal data, educational background and the courses which they are applying for.
2. GCSEs (a copy) issued by one of the official examination boards in UK or in country of origin.
3. GCE Advanced Level (a copy) issued by one of the official examination boards in UK (AQA, OCR/CIE, Edexcel, CCEA/ICAAE, WJEC) or in the country of origin - awarded in Biology and Chemistry - at least one of these two subjects at A-level, and the other one - either in A/S (Advanced Subsidiary) level or in the GCSE. The grades awarded for the two subjects must be A or B. (In cases where the applicants apply before they have taken their final A-level exams they should present provisional "Statement of Results" when applying and additionally - the actual certificate)
4. Health certificate (original) issued not earlier than one month prior to application and verified in the country from which the candidate is applying.
5. Document (a verified copy) certifying the citizenship or two documents certifying the citizenship - for the candidates with dual citizenship, one of which is Bulgarian.
6. 4 recent photos - 4/5 cm
The documents listed above (p. 2, 3, 4, 5) must be legalised (Apostille-affixed), translated into Bulgarian and verified according to the official state procedures.
The documents (original plus two photocopies for non-EU citizens) should be submitted to the Foreign Student Admission Office of Medical University - Plovdiv by the applicants in person or by their representatives to be considered for admission.
The deadline for submitting documents is 31 August for EU-citizens and 30 June for non-EU citizens.

Foreign students may apply for training in:
- English language course (Medicine and Dental Medicine) with parallel Bulgarian language course. Before being admitted, non-native English speakers must prove their English language proficiency at least at B1 level by holding a diagnostic test at the University.

Medical Care for Foreign Citizens
All EU-citizens must have EHIC cards that should be updated every year.

Student loans
Student loans for education in Bulgaria are available only for applicants who are residents of an EU member state or the EEA. Any current or newly accepted student or PhD student under the age of 35 may take a loan to pay his/her tuition fee.
It is required that applicants have full, unsuspended student rights (be full-time students) and hold an EU citizenship or be part of the European Economic Area (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein).
To withdraw a loan, current students must fill out a standardised form and get it confirmed by the University where they are enrolled. The form contains personal details of the student, semester of study, the amount of the tuition fee, degree and other information.The amount needed to pay the tuition fee is transferred by the bank directly to the university.
For the first semester, new applicants have to pay the tuition fee for the first semester and reclaim this amount when the university has issued a document certifying student status and the receipt for the paid semester fee...

Important
The total amount of the loan, including principal and interest, shall be repaid in equal monthly installments within 10 years. Borrowers can pay their loans back earlier without additional fees due. Interest rate is fixed at 7%. Students will have to start paying the loan back one year and one month after the date of their official graduation.

Location
Medical University - Plovdiv is situated in the city of Plovdiv which is the second largest in Bulgaria. It is situated in the Upper Thracian Plain (Gornotrakiyska Nizina), on both banks of the Maritsa River. The population of the city is about 350,000 people. The climate is transitional-continental with mild winters and hot summers. The average temperature in January is +1C, the average temperature in July is +24C.
The town in its present appearance was built around seven hills - the hills of Plovdiv (Plovdiv Tepes) which are an inseparable part of the citys history. Plovdiv is one of the oldest cities in Europe - the beginning of its history dates back to 4,000 years BC. In the beginning the ancient settlement was situated on the natural elevation between Nebet, Taksim and Dzhambaz hills (the Three Hills). In ancient times Thracians inhabited the Three Hills and built a fortified settlement - the largest city in Thrace.
The city is a large industrial and commercial center. Plovdiv International Fair is a showground/trade centre which annually hosts various industry-specific exhibitions and trade fairs.The city also hosts theater, dancing and movie festivals, and the numerous archaeological finds of Thracian, Roman and Byzantine times not only recall the past, but are successfully combined with the modern architecture of the city. Many of these events are held in the Roman "ancient theatre" which is one of the best preserved examples of a traditional Roman amphitheatre.
The city has several museums - historical, archaeological, ethnographic, and natural science museum, as well as an Art Gallery and a Drama Theatre. One of the most famous landmarks is the architectural complex of the "old town" where many beautiful houses from the time of the Bulgarian Revival had been preserved and restored. Many of them are inhabited to the present day.
The city is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country and the cultural and economic centre of southern Bulgaria. There are many accommodation options here - from luxurious hotels to hostels. The main street of the city offers excellent opportunities for entertainment and shopping the restaurants options are numerous.
An international jury chose Plovdiv to be the European City of Culture in 2019.
