Medical University Sofia is the oldest medical institution of higher education in Bulgaria. The medical faculty was founded by the decree of His Majesty King Ferdinand in 1917. Since its foundation, more than 60 000 specialists, including 4,600 foreign citizens, have been taught there.

Entry requirements for Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy in English at Sofia Medical University
It is mandatory that the prospective EU and EEA applicants:
1) have completed secondary education (hold a Diploma or secondary school leaving certificate) which enables them to continue their studies in higher institutions and universities in the country in which the secondary education has been completed.
2) have studied, completed and obtained grades in Biology and Chemistry subjects in the secondary school - for those applicants who are interested in the Programs of Medicine or Dental Medicine.
Native speakers are not required to prove their English language competence.

Admission of foreign students at the Sofia Medical University
Foreign citizens applying to Medical University Sofia must present the documents listed below:
Foreign citizens are admitted to Medical University Sofia in accordance with the Law on Higher Education and Ordinance on the State Requirements for Admitting of Students in the Institutions of Higher Education in Republic of Bulgaria if they have completed secondary education that makes them eligible to continue their education in their home country and if they have grade not less than good 4 in Biology and Chemistry in their secondary education diploma or equivalent of the diploma for secondary education document.

Documents to be submitted:
A copy of the diploma for secondary education or a copy of document equivalent of the diploma for secondary education (which both should contain the subjects studied). The copy or the equivalent must have an apostil by a Hagues Convention country or a stamp of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by the country that Bulgaria has a mutual contract for legal assistance. The Apostil and the stamp should be from the country that issued the diploma or its equivalent. The copy or the equivalent with an original Apostil or with a stamp of the correspondent Ministry of Foreign Affairs has to be translated into the Bulgarian language, and this translation should be certified by the Bulgarian Embassy /Consulate at the respective country/. In this case, the translation in Bulgarian language and the certification of this translation can also be done by the Consulate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Republic of Bulgaria. When the copy of the diploma for secondary education or the equivalent of the diploma for secondary education is issued by non-Hagues Convention country or by a country that Republic Bulgaria has not signed a Contract for legal assistance the common practice for legalization and for certification of the translation in Bulgarian language is applicable.
A document, issued by a competent body who attests that the applicant has the right to continue his/her education in all degrees in the Institutions of Higher Education (Universities) at the country (displays the name of the country) that he/she has completed his Secondary Education, with an original Apostil by a Hagues Convention country or a stamp of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by a country that Bulgaria has a mutual contract for legal assistance. The document should be translated in Bulgarian language, and this translation should be certified by the Bulgarian Embassy/Consulate at the country where the document is issued. The translation in Bulgarian language and certification of this translation can also be done by the Consulate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bulgaria. When the document is issued by a non- Hagues Convention country and Bulgaria has not signed a contract for legal assistance with this country the common practice for legalization and for certification of the translation in the Bulgarian language is applicable. A copy of the passport/identity card with the photo and the data of the person.
A medical certificate issued within one month period before the date of application translated into Bulgarian language and this translation should be certified by the Bulgarian Embassy/Consulate at the country that issued the medical certificate. When the medical certificate is accompanied by an original Apostil by a Hagues Convention country or with a stamp of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by a country that Bulgaria has a mutual contract for legal assistance, the translation in Bulgarian language of the Medical certificate and the verification on this translation should be done by the Bulgarian Embassy/Consulate in the country, where the medical certificate is issued or by the Consulate of the Ministry of the Foreign Affairs in R Bulgaria. When the certificate is issued by a the non-Hagues convention country and Bulgaria has not signed a contract for legal assistance with this country the common practice for legalization and verification of the translation in the Bulgarian language is applicable.

Location of Sofia Medical University
Sofia is Bulgarias capital and its largest city. Founded thousands of years ago, today the city continues to develop as the countrys cultural and economic center. At present, the city has a population of 1,250,000.
Sofia is located in the western part of the country, on the Sofia plain and the lower slopes of Mount Vitosha. The citys average altitude is 550 meters above sea level, the climate is moderate and continental, characterized by cold winters and relatively cool summers. The average temperature in January is -1C and the average July temperature is +20 C.
The city is located at a strategic crossroads. The route from western Europe to Istanbul passes through Sofia via Belgrade and Skopje, then through Plovdiv to Turkey. Sofia is relatively close to the capitals of most Balkan countries: Athens is 837 km Belgarde is 374 km Bucharest is 395 km Zagreb is 762 km Ljubljana is 897 km Sarajevo is 549 km Skopje is 239 km Tirana is 553 km.
Sofia is also home to Bulgarias most prestigious and largest educational institutions universities, colleges, and middle schools that offer solidly-grounded, up-to-date instruction in such disciplines as Architecture, Medicine, The Humanities, Engineering, Music and Choreography, and Fine Arts.
Near Sofia, in the Vitosha, Lozen, and Stara Planina (Central Balkan) Mountains, over the centuries so many monasteries have been founded that they came to be known as Sofias Holy Mountains. They can be considered as a single complex and played an important role in preserving the Bulgarian spiritual heritage during the centuries of Ottoman occupation. Still standing are the Dragalevski, Lozen, Germanski, Kremikovski, Cherepishki, and Osenovlashki Monasteries, among others.
Opportunities for sport and recreation in the capital are many and varied outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, modern gymnasiums and sports halls, and parks. The citys stadiums draw thousands of fans for matches between major football teams.
Bulgaria is strategically located in southeast Europe in the region known as The Balkans. It shares national borders with five countries, and the Black Sea lies on its eastern border. It has a population of around 7.5m. Its capital city, Sofia, is one of the oldest cities in Europe and has good transport connections to other parts of Europe and Asia Minor. Bulgaria joined the European Union on 1st January 2007 and retained its currency, the Bulgarian Lev (BGN). There are no immediate plans to adopt the Euro as its currency. Bulgaria is also a member of NATO.
